How to file a tax return for a company
What is the definition of a business tax return?
Companies and organisations file a company tax return, commonly known as the CT600 form, to report their spending, profits, and corporation tax numbers to HMRC. A corporate tax return must be filed once a year, but unlike self-assessment tax returns, there is no fixed deadline. Instead, your return's due date will be determined by your company's accounting period.
Who is required to file a business tax return?
Those who run limited firms are required to file company tax returns. To get started, you'll need to register for corporate tax.
If you're a sole trader or part of a partnership, you'll have to file a self-assessment tax return.
Companies House is where you'll register your limited company when it's first formed. Most businesses will also register as an employer for corporation tax and PAYE at this time. If you register your business by mail, through an agent, or through third-party software, you must also register for corporation tax.
You must register within three months of starting a business, which includes buying, selling, advertising, and even renting or hiring someone.
HMRC will send you a 'notice to deliver a company tax return' if it believes your company is likely to owe corporation tax. Even if you make a loss or don't owe anything, you must file a company tax return once you receive this notice.
If you do not receive this notice but believe you owe tax, you should contact HMRC immediately to avoid being prosecuted for 'undeclared tax.'
How to file a tax return for a business
The majority of people will be required to file their business tax return online.
- Before you begin, gather the following information: your company's taxable profit (total company income minus any tax allowances and business expenses);
- Your government gateway user ID and password. When you first use the service to file your company's tax return, you can create a user ID.
- If you're filing your accounts at the same time, you'll need your Companies House password and login code.
If you want to file your return in Croydon or if you can't file online, you must use the paper CT600 form. HMRC has compiled a list of plausible explanations for why this could be the case.
